Job Title: Senior Statistician Contract Length: 24 months

Job Purpose:

· To perform statistical analysis of data gathered from research projects studying the genetic epidemiology of common diseases;

Liaises with:
· External Collaborators & Company Personnel
·
· Major Duties:
·
· Assist with the analysis of quantitative data on twin and family data collected in the Unit.
· To employ appropriate genetic epidemiological methods and statistical techniques to the genetic data generated in population and family studies
· To liaise closely with the genetic analysis team and Clinical Research Team in exploring and developing the theoretical aspects of genetic data analysis, including the use of publicly available data sets.
· To assist with the writing of MM reports, publications for appropriate scientific journals and to present research findings at scientific meetings.
· Contribute to the integration and collaboration of research projects with other branches of the department and with external collaborators
· To advise and consult on experimental designs and interpretation of genetic epidemiology experiments.
Person Specification

Education

Essential

§ BSc or equivalent and PhD or equivalent in biological science, genetics, mathematics, statistics or other numerate discipline

Desirable

§ Post-doctoral studies in genetics of complex traits


Evidence of delivery

Essential

· Publication record in the field of genetic epidemiology or molecular genetics or equivalent discipline.
· Experience in complex traits
· Is a member of local statistical community
· Shows evidence of collaboration and delivery in multi-disciplinary teams

Desirable

· At least 3 years post doctoral experience
A number of years experience of genetic analysis at high level



Technical Ability

Essential

· Ability to use statistical and genetic analysis packages to high standard
· Ability to use statistical analysis packages such as and STATA or SAS to a high standard.
· Ability to use genetic packages such as Plink, Merlin.
· Ability to code in relevant language e.g R
· Knowledge of numerical methods, stimulations studies, MCMC algorithms.
· Ability to work on own initiative and meet competing and demanding deadlines
· Ability to communicate effectively at all levels in a complex multi-disciplinary environment with the ability to produce concise verbal and written reports
